There are three keys to saying goodbye to one year before moving on to the next and they are…
Reflect, Celebrate and Release.
In today’s post, the beginning of a 3 part series on saying goodbye to 2011, we will look at the first part.
1. Reflect
It’s important to take some time (not too much) to look at the year that was and reflect firstly on what didn’t work for you or what you perceive were your failures. Now I’m not asking you to beat yourself up around these things but rather to just look at them and ask yourself a number of questions.
a. Was there something in this disappointment that lead to a higher learning. Did you learn it?
b. If you had achieved this goal, what would you have missed out on?
c. Is this still a relevant goal for 2012 or is it time to let this one go?
d. What have you or can you learn about yourself regarding your feelings and reactions around these disappointments?
Now, you must know that any disappointments and perceived failures do not define you, they are just a reflection of the past year. You now have a choice to leave these feelings and your conclusions about them in the past or to carry it all forward into the future. Rather than continuing to react and be a victim of it, you can choose to respond to it and move forward knowing that every experience that you have had in the past year and even further back has lead you to where you are right now.
It has given you the experience and trials that you needed to get to this place right now, here on the precipice of a brand new year and able to better deal with anything that is coming your way as you step forward into your New Year of Success.
Next, it’s time to look at all the things you achieved in 2011. When looking at them and if writing them down make sure to write short sentences starting with I ie. I did this, I learned this etc.
Consider the following questions when listing your achievements.
a. Where was I at the beginning of the year and where am I now?
b. What did I do well in all or any areas of my life?
c. What am I proud of?
d. How did I challenge myself?
e. What did I learn?
Now that you’ve reflected on the good and the bad of 2011 answer the following two questions about your year.
a. What was the main learning focus this year?
b. Who have you become as a result of the year that was 2011?
Next week we will continue this series of articles and these exercises and we will do some celebrating for all the growth and achievements of 2011.
Please share your reflections below and tell us about your 2011..do you feel satisfied with what you achieved, perhaps you’re feeling a little disappointed that a few things didn’t work out. Are you looking forward to the opportunity to start a new fresh year?
And share your answers to the last two questions…what was your main learning and who have you become this year. Spill it all and start the celebrations.
